WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT
January 2012

I hope everyone had a great X-mas. In the East Mountains we had 18" of snow to contend with. The interstate was closed for a couple of days which always causes a little inconvenience. Having lived in NM for so many years it's hard not to appreciate the moisture after a year of drought. It's that time of year again so, for those of you who haven't, don't forget to pay your dues for 2012. The 2012 application form is available on the website & in this newsletter. Remember to complete the "Hold Harmless" section. An online survey was created and this will only be sent to current, paid memberships. The survey will help us plan events for this next year and allows one response per household. It is a very simple form (if I can do it anybody can) that includes questions on the amount and kind of animals in your household and some on your interests for the coming year. Look for the survey from Sanny in your inbox soon. We are trying a free online survey service for the first time and hope we have a high response rate. The Scott Martin Memorial ride at San Lorenzo Canyon is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2012 and will be hosted once again by Steve and Mary Randall. See the calender and further in this newsletter for details on the ride. We are getting closer to the need for our various committees. The Show Committee (or the first phase of it) is made up of Donna Lunn, Elizabeth Moore and Sanny Silvius. When this phase is completed, an expansion is needed. Please stay in touch with your Chapter Chairperson if you are interested with future phases. Parade Committee - Allen Severs will head up the Committee to coordinate club parade functions. In closing, remember the board meeting on January 20, 2012. Every member is welcome to attend, however, only board members will be able to present items, unless you are specifically asked to. Contact your Chapter board representative with your concerns that might need board involvement. Also, please remember that the only Facebook page the club will be using is the Rio Grande Mule and Donkey Association authorized one. If you need to contact me please send me an e-mail or give me a call. bc1935@aol.com

RGMDA SHOW COMMITTEE

The first meeting of the RGMDA Show Committee was December 16th, with Sanny Silvius, Elizabeth Moore, & Donna Lunn attending.

Phase 1 included discussion about an RGMDA Participation award system. A system was created & will be presented to the Board on the 20th for approval. Please record your hours for the Scott Martin Ride. The approved Participation Program will be published in the next newsletter & added to the website, where up to date information will be posted.

A circuit show list for the end of year hi point  was discussed & will be presented to the Board this month. The thought is to have 3 RGMDA donkey/mule only shows with similar classes for participants to enter with the goal of winning high point awards.

Donna said she would check in to an arena near her house that might be a possible facility to hold an RGMDA show or clinic.

The Show Rules will be reviewed with an effort to include more participants & will be presented for the Board’s approval. All changes will be listed in the next newsletter.

After the Board’s approval, the Show Committee will move on to “Phase II” of the planning stage. The remaining phases are listed below:

Phase II has a broader group of members that develop the organization, management and structure of the each particular show.  This includes creating a prize list, show venues, ribbons and prizes, course design, advertising, judges, concessions, etc.  In other words, all the preparation work for each show.  This is a larger group of people and a great place for those with limited show experience to participate along with seasoned people.  This group's work begins at the completion of Phase I

Phase III includes all tasks for the actual show day.  These people are critical for each show's success.  Tasks range from Ringmaster, Gate person, arena staff, Secretary Office , Prize Patrol, Announcer, Runners, etc. Experience is not required for many of the positions and participants usually have a have a great time.

RIP

We have redently lost two long time friends of RGMDA:

Calvin, the donkey owned by Tom Brunton; and Pecos Jewell, Pinto Draft Horse owned by Lowell & Gayle Clark.

Many of you have known or at least heard of Tom Brunton, and his donkey Calvin. Starting in Los Alamos, the two have travelled and been around most of the neighboring states at shows and events from the wild to the mild. Tom and Calvin have been partners for 27 years, but this last week Calvin would not recover from the cold. You may have seen him at the Western National Stock Show, or in Houston, or even in Albuq at the state fair. They were true partners, and will always be so. Here is a picture of them at the horse fair from a few years ago. Submitted by Robert Auge

Pecos Jewell lived a wonderful life at Pecos Pinto Draft Horses. Her dam was our registered black Percheron mare Jewell. Her sire was our Pecos Chief. Pecos Jewell was born on April 18, 1996. Jewell started showing from a weanling at halter to Grand Champion mare at halter. She was shown in all draft classes. Jewell was in the TV movie Lonesome Dove made for the History Channel This summer and fall she was on a stage coach owned by Eric Roybal of Pecos, NM. We did several parades and weddings. This is just some of the things Jewell did in her lifetime. We miss you our beautiful Jewell. Submitted By Gayle Clark.
